How to Merge the Family Trees of Several Families

When two families are joined by marriage, their trees can be merged into one, gently and only with the mutual consent of the owners.

Why merge

Each branch of a family often has its own keeper and its own tree. Merging joins them into a shared genealogy that shows how the lineages became related, and where descendants can find all of their ancestors in one place.

How it works

You send a connection request, providing the link to a relative's memory page from the other tree and the type of kinship (spouses, parent to child). The owner of that page receives the request.

The consent of both sides

A merge happens only after confirmation. This protects you from anyone attaching your relatives without asking. You can confirm or decline a request in the "Requests" section.

After the merge

The two trees come together in the display: you see the shared genealogy but edit only your own relatives. The connection can be broken at any time, and the trees become separate again.

  • Joins branches and lineages.
  • A request by link plus the type of kinship.
  • Only with mutual consent.
  • Each person edits their own relatives.
